The Costa Brava is the name given to the coastal area of Catalonia, which begins at the mouth of the river La Tordera en Blanes and ends at the border with France in Portbou. Bordered on the north and the south coast Vermella the Costa del Maresme.
This coastal strip has an area of 214 km and is comprised of the Catalan regions of Alt Empordà, Lower Empordà and La Selva. It is situated in the province of Gerona, belonging to the Autonomous Community of Catalonia in Spain.
The term Costa Brava was published by journalist Ferran Agulló in the pages of The Veu September 12, 1908. With this expression, the reporter wanted to describe the wild and rugged landscape that characterizes much of the coastal zone.
Now for the decade of the 30, the tourists crowded the beaches in the area, yet mingled with fishermen and farmers who cultivated near the coast. From the 50's and 60's tourism phenomenon is widespread and there was a large urban development in some localities in this region.
Until the arrival of the tourism economy, many of the towns of the coastal region were small fishing villages of whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Its people, its traditions and natural beauty of the region attracted the interest of artists and writers such as Marc Chagall, Picasso, Dali Rusiñol. Currently, the area still retains much of this essence that characterized it before the change that marked the arrival of tourism.
